West beginning of Asian Hinterland
Estonia is the west-side beginning of extensive railway network covering entire Eurasia and connecting the Baltic Sea region to the Pacific Ocean also by land bridge.
Nowadays, more than 90 percent of the freight transit through Estonia is by rail. Estonian Railways is a vertically integrated railway company with the annual cargo volume of 44.3 million tons (2006). Meeting the needs of containerization Estonian Railways have launched regular block-train service link between Tallinn and Moscow which is serving rapidly growing volumes. Block train link between Tallinn and Central Asia (Kazakhstan / Almaty) is also under development and first block trains have started the route. Other dedicated and tailor-made project for concrete customers could be developed and implemented.
