Estonia is situated in North-Eastern Europe, on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. To the north it is bordered by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the east by Russia and to the south by Latvia. The shortest route from Russia by sea to China and also to Western Europe and North America is through the Baltic States.

West beginning of Asian Hinterland

Estonia is the west-side beginning of extensive railway network covering entire Eurasia and connecting the Baltic Sea region to the Pacific Ocean also by land bridge.

Nowadays, more than 90 percent of the freight transit through Estonia is by rail. Estonian Railways is a vertically integrated railway company with the annual cargo volume of 44.3 million tons (2006). Efficient SCM and technology, flexible transport tariff policy, and sales strategy based on trust enable Estonian Railways to provide the best transport services to its customers. Powerful GE locomotives are ready to carry up to 8,000-ton trains. Compliance with security requirements meeting the European standards and tight cooperation with other links of the SCM chain ensure prompt arrival of clients’ goods at any location in the world.

Meeting the needs of containerization Estonian Railways have launched regular block-train service link between Tallinn and Moscow which is serving rapidly growing volumes. Block train link between Tallinn and Central Asia (Kazakhstan / Almaty) is also under development and first block trains have started the route. Other dedicated and tailor-made project for concrete customers could be developed and implemented.
